NASA Revealed What a Black Hole Sounds Like, and It’s Terrifying

Anything to do with space immediately terrifies me. Just the concept of seeing nothing but blackness out in the open it’s so scary to think about. I seriously don’t know how astronauts do it to not go crazy while up there, because there’s literally nothing. So much so that you think it would be absolutely quiet.

I mean, at least that’s what I thought.

NASA decided they wanted to scare us a little bit by sharing what they described as the sound of a black hole that could be audible to human ears. Apparently space can be quite loud, especially if hot gas surrounds a black hole.

And I know what you’re wondering how in the world does sound travel through space? Well, NASA has an explanation.

What Does a Black Hole Sound Like?

“The misconception that there is no sound in space originates because most space is a vacuum, providing no way for sound waves to travel,” they said in a tweet. “A galaxy cluster has so much gas that we’ve picked up actual sound. Here it’s amplified, and mixed with other data, to hear a black hole.”

So, what exactly is a Galaxy Cluster that we’re hearing? Well, it’s called Perseus, the specific data come from NASA’s Chandra Xray Observatory and it’s actually a recording that was released back in May for NASA’s Black Hole Week.  Yes, that is actually a thing. So what you’re hearings are sounds of several waves rippling through plasma and gas in the cluster, which is whopping 250 million light years from Earth.

Data Sonification

“In some ways, this sonification is unlike any other done before… because it revisits the actual sound waves discovered in data…,” NASA went on to explain.

“The popular misconception that there is no sound in space originates with the fact that most of space is essentially a vacuum, providing no medium for sound waves to propagate through. A galaxy cluster, on the other hand, has copious amounts of gas that envelop the hundreds or even thousands of galaxies within it, providing a medium for the sound waves to travel.”

So, there you have it! Your fun fact of the day. It’s honestly scary to think about what people who work for NASA find every day. Can you imagine all the secrets they are hiding? I bet they found this years ago and they’re barely releasing it now.

You just never know with NASA.

What do you think?
