New accusations have emerged against a Slovenian priest who was found to have abused over 20 women sexually and spiritually. The abuse occurred about 3 decades ago and involved coercing nuns into having threesomes. Marko Ivan Rupnik was serving as a Jesuit spiritual director of a Slovenian convent at the time of the alleged abuse.

Former Nun Claims Father Marko Rupnik Psycho-Spiritually Abused Her

A former Catholic nun spoke with Domani, an Italian investigative newspaper, about the abuse she experienced. She claimed to be abused between 1987 and 1994.

Jesuit is a term for the Roman Catholic Society of Jesus, an order of priests and brothers that was founded over 500 years ago by Ignatius Loyola. Pope Francis is a Jesuit, and Jesuits, like Catholics in the Vatican, are beholden to Canon Law. Jesuit priests and Catholic nuns are required to make many vows, and both must make a vow of chastity. This means that nuns and priests are not allowed to marry, nor have sex or threesomes.

The former nun told Domani that Rupnik manipulated her and other nuns into watching pornography and having group sex with him. She described the abuse incurred by Rupnik as a “descent into Hell.”

“Father Marko started slowly and sweetly getting inside my psychological and spiritual world, exploiting my uncertainties and fragility and using my relationship with God to push me into sexual experiences with him,” said the nun. She said that he groomed her and prevented her from speaking out.

Jesuit Priest Allegedly Coerced Numerous Nuns Into Having “Holy Trinity” Threesomes With Him

The nun said that Rupnik convinced other nuns like herself to have threesomes with him as a reenactment of the Holy Trinity. By doing so, they were convinced that it was somehow related to God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

When the nun made her first complaint of the abuse in 1994, she said she was ignored. Rupnik, who is famous throughout the Catholic hierarchy as a famous mural artist, was gaining an international following. Thus, when the nun brought her complaints to other superiors, she said they were swept under the rug. Rupnik’s fame was power, and in a sense, he was above reproach due to everyone protecting him.

“It was truly an abuse of conscience,” the nun said. “He should have been stopped 30 years ago.”

Rupnik Was Excommunicated, Immediately Forgiven, and Let Back Into Catholic Church

At one point, Rupnik absolved a woman who made a confession to him— about having sex with him. In doing so, Rupnik had absolved an accomplice. His action was considered a mortal sin and a violation of Canon Law. The Vatican automatically excommunicated him from the Catholic Church when this came to light in 2020.

But within a month of his ex-communication, Rupnik repented and was allowed back into the Church. When more abuse allegations arose the following year, the Vatican decided not to prosecute him due to an expired “statute of limitations.” However, he was put on “precautionary restrictions” and banned from leading spiritual exercises, hearing confessions, or giving spiritual directions.

But according to the National Catholic Register’s timeline of the Father Rupnik allegations, he has continued to lead spiritual exercises.

After AP News published an admission by Reverend Arturo Sosa that Rupnik had been excommunicated and allowed back, more allegations of abuse have come out. AP published this news just one week ago.

Rupnik’s supervisor, Rev. Johan Verschueren, has asked other abuse victims to come forward and talk to him.

“My main concern in all of this is for those who have suffered, and I invite anyone who wishes to make a new complaint or who wants to discuss complaints already made to contact me,” he said.
