Deeply disturbing video of an NYPD cop repeatedly punching a young girl in the head has gone viral. The cop has been suspended pending further investigation. The girl, who willingly identified herself as 14-year-old Kyonna Robinson, spoke out about the incident.
NYPD Cops Intervened in a Schoolyard Fight and Ended Up Beating up a Girl
The video shows a mob of kids and cops outside a schoolyard in Staten Island on January 3. According to New York City Eric Adams, who is also a former police officer, a girl was getting jumped when officers intervened to help.
“I was not pleased with what I saw on the video,” said Mayor Adams (via NBC).
Video shows an officer grabbing Kyonna, who is bent over from the waist, and repeatedly punching her in the head. Meanwhile, at least two other officers are following, although it is unclear what they are trying to do. Bystanders at this point completely divert their attention from whatever was happening before, to the fact that a grown cop is violently punching a 14-year-old girl in her head.
14-Year-Old Girl Who Was Punched In the Head by NYPD Cop Said Her Younger Sister Was Handcuffed
CBS2 exclusively interviewed Kyonna, and her younger sister, after getting their mother’s permission.
Kyonna told CBS that her 12-year-old sister had initially gotten into a fight with another girl. They were by the Intermediate School 51 in Staten Island.
“The girl is bigger than my sister, fighting my sister, of course I’m gonna jump in. I didn’t even know what was going on. I just ran over there,” said Kyonna.
Kyonna said an officer put her 12-year-old sister in handcuffs before she went up to intervene. She nudged the officer to get his attention.
“He pushed me and then I punched him in his face two times, and we just started fighting,” she said. “I don’t care who you are. You touch me, I’m gonna fight back.”
At that point, the NYPD cop repeatedly punched the girl in the head.
Sources to CBS report that Kyonna Robinson was then charged as a juvenile for assaulting an officer and resisting arrest. She was also taken to a hospital for a headache and a bump on her head.
NYPD Officer Suspended Without Pay, Investigation Is Ongoing
The NYPD tweeted that the officers involved in the incident are currently under investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau. The officer who was seen repeatedly punching the girl has also been suspended without pay.
Mayor Adams has said that he intends to investigate bodycam footage from the officers involved as well as the circulating video taken by a bystander.
Police officers say that Kyonna struck the unnamed officer in the head before he struck her. They added that he is a veteran police officer of 14-years.
