The Last Movie Stars will chronicle the careers and marriage of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, and is set to launch July 21. Ethan Hawke is directing and George Clooney will voice Newman, with Laura Linney serving as the voice of Woodward.

Hawke said it Newman’s family who came to him, prior to the 2020 COVID pandemic, and asked him to put together the documentary.

Newman died in 2008 at the age of 83. Woodward, 92, lives in Westport, Connecticut, where she and Newman resided and raised their three daughters.

Per Playbill: “Newman was Tony-nominated for his performance in the 2002 revival of Our Town and was also seen on Broadway in Picnic (Woodward was an understudy in the production), The Desperate Hours, Sweet Bird of Youth, and opposite Woodward in Baby Want a Kiss. Woodward’s additional Broadway credits included The Lovers and Candida. Woodward won her Academy Award for her work in The Three Faces of Eve, while Newman won his performance Oscar for The Color of Money. He was also the recipient of an Honorary Academy Award and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.”

Of his marriage to Woodward, Newman once explained his loyalty this way:

“I don’t like to discuss my marriage, but I will tell you something that may sound corny but which happens to be true. I have steak at home. Why should I go out for hamburger?”
