Move over nicotine! According to a Gallup poll, more people in the United States are now smoking more marijuana than cigarettes! Mind blown, indeed. Apparently, cigarette use has been going down in the past decade with only 11% of Americans saying they smoke them. This was revealed in a poll conducted from July 5 to 26, compared to the whopping 45% in the mid-1950s.

Sixteen percent of Americans say that they smoke weed, with 48% saying they have tried it at some point in time. Back in 1969, only 4% of Americans stated they smoked weed. Safe two say both uses of both substances have dramatically shifted.

Back in 2019, 83% of Americans stated they thought cigarettes were harmful to smokers, while 14% stated they were “somewhat harmful.” Nine out of 10 adults stated in 2013 that smoking caused cancer while 91% of smokers stated in 2015 they wish they never started smoking.

Cannabis Use Overtakes Cigarette Use For The First Time

“Smoking cigarettes is clearly on the decline and is most likely to become even more of a rarity in the years ahead,” stated Gallup Senior Scientist Dr. Frank Newport. “This reflects both public awareness of its negative effects and continuing government efforts at all levels to curtail its use.”

In a July poll, 53% of people stated that majijuana indeed has positive effects for those who use it. But, alcohol is still the most popular substance, remaining consistent. Sixty-seven percent of Americans revealed they are drinkers compared to 63% back in 1939.

“In sum, American adults are significantly more likely to use alcohol than either marijuana or cigarette,” Gallup stated. “And while alcohol consumption has remained relatively constant over the decades, cigarette use is now less than a fourth of what it was in the 1950s. Americans’ regular use of marijuana is modestly higher than cigarettes at this point, but the trend over recent decades in marijuana use is upward.
