The flight was headed for Sao Paulo, Brazil, but didn’t get very far, clearly experiencing a mechanical issue. It was carrying 256 passengers, per reports.
The Federal Aviation Administration released a statement to say the matter s under investigation:
“United Airlines Flight 149, a Boeing 777-200, landed safely at Newark Liberty International Airport shortly before 1 a.m. local time today after the crew reported an emergency,’ the statement read. “The flight departed Newark and was headed to So Paulo, Brazil before it returned. The FAA will investigate.”
