It appears The Punisher is coming back … or maybe not.

We can’t really be sure.

Either way, fans are holding out hope for a reboot. Many of them thought the Marvel series on Netflix never should have been cancelled in the first place.

That happened back in 2019 after the show aired for two years. Now, fans don’t know what to think.

All of the recent buzz started thanks to actress Rosario Dawson. The actress told the crowd at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo that the show was returning.

“I found out yesterday that The Punisher was happening again so I feel like it’s my second chance,” Dawson said. “It’s the only one of the shows that I wasn’t in and I love Jon Bernthal. Let’s all make it happen collectively, guys.”

Everyone was fired up. But then, Dawson walked back her comments, indicating she was told by fans — and not anyone in show business — about the return of The Punisher. So she ran with it.

“I can’t be trusted,” she wrote. “Getting intel from fans during signings is iffy apparently. My bad. I get excited. Confirmation is key when you’re told what you want to hear… “

That is very true. You shouldn’t relay information as fact when it’s based on nothing more than high hopes. But Dawson, of course, isn’t the only one guilty in that department, not in today’s age of social media and fake news.

What is the show about?

Anyway, The Punisher starred Jon Bernthal and first aired on Nov. 17, 2017. Google described it this way:

“After exacting revenge on the people responsible for the deaths of his wife and children, Frank Castle uncovers a conspiracy that runs deeper than New York’s criminal underworld. Now known as the Punisher, he must dig deep into the conspiracy to discover the truth about injustices that affect more than just him and his family. Assisting the vigilante in his quest to fight criminals are best friend Billy Russo, who runs private military corporation Anvil, and former NSA analyst Micro, who shares common enemies with Castle and helps him as part of a so-called marriage of convenience.”

Rumors of a reboot came on the heels of another Marvel classic, Daredevil, will take place on Disney+. “The 18-episode Daredevil: Born Again — which will find Charlie Cox and on-screen adversary Vincent D’Onofrio reprising their roles from the Netflix series — is set to bow on the streamer in Spring 2024,” TV Line wrote.
