With the popularity of Netflix’s Cobra Kai, it’s really no surprise that another Karate Kid movie is on the works.
Just don’t ask Ralph Macchio about it. He apparently knows nothing.
Macchio, of course, was the original Karate Kid, playing Daniel LaRusso first back in 1984. Now 60, Macchio has reprised the role in Cobra Kai.
But as for the new The Karate Kid … yeah, he’s apparently as lost as the rest of us.
“I know no other information,” Macchio told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s too early to tell what that story is [with the movie]. This is all, like, happening in real time as you’re asking me this question.”
Cobra Kai was created by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald and is now in its fifth season. Like Macchio, they’re in the dark with The Karate Kid being released by Sony Pictures, reportedly in June 2024.
Macchio is ready for more!
“The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday,” Hurwitz responded to a user in a tweet. “But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well.”
As for Cobra Kai, Macchio seems to believe it will continue on beyond this season. That said, it has yet to be picked up for a sixth.
“People seem to love the show and it doesn’t seem like it’s slowing down,” Macchio told EW. “I think we’ll have the opportunity to let the stories evolve.”
