A ring doorbell video that was released by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office showed a 22-year-old James Rayl walking up to a house on July 31. Rayl is shown repeatedly bashing the front door, as he attempts to break into the house.

Shooting Caught on Ring Doorbell

Several voices from the inside can be heard, telling Rayl that his ex-girlfriend didn’t want to see him. The family then asked the man to leave the residence, and that the cops were being called.

At one point, a voice can be heard saying that he had a gun. As Rayl seems to get through the front door by physically kicking it, several shots ring out. Rayl was shot a total of three times before stumbling into the driveway and collapsing on the ground. Several neighbors heard the altercation and can be seen on the ring doorbell video concerned for the boy, telling others to call 911. According to authorities, Rayl had died at the scene after the shooting.

Fox News stated the man’s daughter had ended her relationship with Rayl more than a year and a half ago. But, Rayl had reportedly left several voicemails on the woman’s phone the night before. He then showed up at the home the next day around 11 am. Shelby County Prosecutor Tim Sell told the media that a grand jury had declined to charge the father in the boy’s death. He cited the state’s Stand Your Ground and Castle Doctrine allowing homeowners to use lethal force when they are threatened.

  1. Once the trigger is pulled there is no calling the bullet back. I think we should all be less quick on the trigger unless your life is definitely in danger. For this reason I refuse to have a gun in our house. I had guns up to the age of forty . Never had the need to use them. So I got rid of them and at 79 I read or see the news of people shooting each other for really no reason at all. But to each his own.

    • Agree with your reasoning
People have become too trigger happy
I wonder if the father has any regret for his excessive force and the killing of a troubled soul

      • Many young women are killed by men with this obsessive refusal to leave them alone.
Once he was breaking into the home the odds that he would kill her this time or next time became a serious threat.

  2. Trigger happy? No reasin at all? The guy was warned, told to leave, that the cops were coming, and still broke in! He may have had a weapon, they don’t know. He certainly is not there for a cup of coffee. They were defending their lives in my opinion. End of story.

    • Anyone who thinks they can kick in your door and not risk serious injury or death is in a dangerous state of mind and most definitely a threat to those inside. Nobody wants to injure another but sometimes they just wont back off, even when warned.
Cant help but feel terrible for this family and the ex’s family.
