A school bus driver has been arrested for drunk driving after running off the side of the road and hitting a mailbox — while driving a bus with kids on it.
The incident took place in the northern Chicago suburb of Gurnee. The driver crashed into a large brick mailbox while taking the kids home from school. According to Lake County’s Assistant State’s Attorney Kelse Banks, there were seven middle school students inside the bus at that time.
Ryan Vanheirseele, 36, was arrested at the scene after police found he had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. Vanheirseele has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence, child endangerment, driving under the influence, and improper lane usage.
Ryan Vanheirseele Arrested
Banks stated that the bus driver initially denied he had been drinking but told officers he “blacked out” during the crash. In addition to failing the field sobriety test, officers found alcoholic beverages in his backpack as well as a cup of lemonade that “smelled like alcohol.”
On the bright side, no one was injured in the accident and other school buses arrived to take the kids safely to their homes.
Meanwhile, a judge set Vanheirseele’s bail at $40,000. It’s safe to say he is likely out of a job that involves driving, especially driving kids. Honestly, this guy is very lucky considering all he hit was a mailbox. This could have gone way way worse. In what mentality do you think it’s okay to drive while intoxicated? Let alone drive a HUGE vehicle that has kids inside? So inconsiderate to say the least! These poor kids must have been so confused and scared, as well as the parents who had no clue what was going on! I bet they are going to sue the school so hard!
