Authorities in Catalonia, Spain are promoting a new way to display gender equality. It’s a promotion that many men are likely to support with their entire being.

That’s right, Catalonia’s Department of Equality and Feminism wants women to go topless too, ya know, fight discrimination.

Now, it should be noted that most men in Catalonia wear shirts in their day-to-day lives. Or at least in public, as far as anyone can tell. But hey, that’s clearly beside the point.

The promotion is aimed at encouraging women to have the option, just as men do. It all began after some women in Catalonia complained that they had been prohibited from going topless at public pools.

Equality For All?

“The sexualization of women starts when they are young, and it accompanies us all our lives,” a video advertisement declared, via the New York Post. “That we must cover up our breasts in some spaces is proof.”

The ad goes on to show a man’s bare chest and proclaims, “This nipple is free.” That’s followed by a woman covering her bare breasts. “This one is not,” the caption reads.

“We wanted to try to combat the discrimination that women suffer sometimes when they go topless in some situations like swimming pools,” Neus Pociello, executive director for the Catalan Women’s Institute, told The Telegraph. “Women should have the right to freedom of expression with their bodies.”

Interestingly, many public beaches in Spain already allow women to strut around topless. But, municipal pool rules are set forth by local governments. And as far as the Catalonia Department of Equality and Feminism is concerned, there are not nearly enough free nipples in those places.
