For men, the key to a successful relationship is being full of dad jokes. Or at least being full of something.

More accurately, researchers from the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland, offered up a study that revealed men are happier in relationships if they think they’re the comic superior.

In other words, men feel good about themselves if they can make women laugh.

Researchers recruited 149 heterosexual couples to reveal their findings.

“People value a good sense of humour in their potential partners,” researchers wrote in their study, published in Personality and Individual Differences. “In courtship, humour can be an indicator of psychological traits, romantic interest, and similar values and life goals.

Are Men Being Happier in Relationships If They Are Funnier?

“However, less attention has been given to the function of humour in established couples.”

Participants were asked about humor in their relationships. Including how often they themselves joked and how often their partner joked. Also whether they found their partner’s jokes to be, ya know, funny.

“Men produced more jokes than women, but the sexes did not differ in how often they responded to their partners’ jokes,” researchers wrote. “Men also rated their jokes as funnier than the jokes of their partners.”

Senses of humor were determined by psychologists, who had participants write amusing captions to go with cartoons. Overall, it was determined that laughter is indeed the best medicine when it comes to romance.

“Jokes, laughter, and humour are still part of the mechanisms involved in building relationships between partners in long-term relationships,” the researchers concluded.
