Though Donald Trump is the Republican presidential nominee, many in the party struggle to find reasons to support him with clear conscience. In fact, The Hill has compiled a rather extensive list of Republicans who will not support Trump in November. Called the #NeverTrump movement, several have thrown their support behind Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Johnson, independent candidate Evan McMullin, or have decided to vote for other seats of the ballot.

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, who recently announced that he would not support Trump or Clinton in November, provided some observations about the future of the Republican party during a Monday segment of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Steele said that some Republicans were “caught in the cross-hairs” trying to deal with the fallout from Trump’s inflammatory behavior while attempting to preserve Republican influence.

Steele said that there would be “a great upheaval” following the end of the race from Trump supporters. He also said that the Never Trump Republicans would “fight like hell” to keep the party together against forces seeking to destroy it:

There’s got to be a great awakening and come-to-Jesus moment for the party after this election.

The former RNC chairman said that the situation applies whether Trump wins or loses in November.
