Susan Sarandon has an impressive repertoire of serious (and some humorous) roles under her belt. She’s been in the acting scene for over 52 years, since 1970. Her IMDb lists a staggering 166 credits for acting and 15 for producing. So, it makes sense that her net worth is up there (despite the fact that women still don’t make as much as men in Hollywood). Sarandon has worked hard for the money, honey. Let’s take a look at what she’s done.

Susan Sarandon’s Early Life

Sarandon recently told Vanity Fair that she never saw acting as an end, but as “a means to an end.” She never felt desperate about getting roles, and in fact, her first ones sort of fell into her lap.

Susan Sarandon was born on October 4, 1946, as Susan Abigail Tomalin. She was born in New York, New York, but her family moved to New Jersey when she was only 4 years old. Raised Roman Catholic, Susan attended the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Drama. She then picked up different kinds of jobs to support herself, including operating a switchboard, cleaning houses, and cutting hair.

From Hollywood to Activism

Her very first role was in the movie Joe in 1970. Her husband at the time, Chris Sarandon, wanted to audition and he brought her with him. While he wasn’t cast, she was, and that was how her Hollywood career began.

For the next several years, Sarandon was continuously working as an actress, primarily in TV series. In 1975, she got her first big break while starring as Janet Weiss in the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In 1987, she played Jane Spofford in The Witches of Eastwick, which earned her a nomination for a Saturn Award as Best Actress.

In 1991, Sarandon played Louise in Thelma and Louise, which earned her nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe. She won the award for Best Actress by the National Board of Review, along with co-star Geena Davis.

One of the more emotionally daunting roles that Sarandon had to play was as Sister Helen Prejean in Dead Man Walking in 1995. That role earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress (the first win after four prior nominations), a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Kansas City Film Critics Award.

It would be impossible to lay out Sarandon’s entire Hollywood career, but she’s still at it, with four films in pre-production as of the writing of this article. This interview with Vanity Fair gives humorous and honest insight into Susan Sarandon’s career from her perspective.

Sarandon spends much of her time as an activist for progressive causes including those that support social, economic, and environmental justice. She was appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1999 and an FAO Goodwill Ambassador in 2010. Her political stances are anti-war, anti-fascist, anti-mass incarceration, pro-LGBTQ, and pro-civil rights.

Susan Sarandon’s Celebrity Love Life Began with Chris Sarandon

Sarandon adopted the last name of her first and only husband, actor Chris Sarandon (who notably played Prince Humperdinck in The Princess Bride). They were married in 1967 and divorced in 1979.

Next was Italian film director and producer Franco Amurri. Although he and Sarandon never married, they did have a child together, Eva Amurri. Eva was born March 15, 1985, and currently works as an American lifestyle blogger and actress. She also is a momma of three children, making Sarandon a grandmother.

Amurri and Sarandon dated from 1984 to 1988. That same year, Sarandon started dating actor and filmmaker Tim Robbins.

Sarandon had two sons with Robbins, Jack and Miles. Jack Henry Robbins was born May 15, 1989, and currently is a director and writer. Miles Guthrie Tomalin Robbins was born May 2, 1992 and is a musician and actor.

Robbins and Sarandon dated until 2009, after being together for over two decades.

Jonathan Bricklin

The following year, she started dating actor Jonathan Bricklin. They dated until 2015.

Bricklin is 31 years younger than Sarandon, but that doesn’t mean the two weren’t in love. He once told People, “She’s someone I love more than anyone I’ve ever been with and that won’t change. We’re going to figure out how life proceeds from here.”

Sarandon, who has repeatedly hinted at being bisexual, recently told People that she is open to finding a kindred spirit who she can travel with — regardless of age or gender.

“I would like to have a travel companion, male, female — age doesn’t matter,” she said. “But I would like to find someone who’s up for an adventure kind of attitude. And also, who cares about something passionately and who loves what they do, whatever that is.”

She wasn’t necessarily talking about romantic relationships, however. She clarified, “In terms of a romantic relationship, I don’t know. That window may have closed, but I’m forever hopeful — but not desperate.”

At 76, Sarandon is looking stunningly gorgeous, so it seems like the world is still her oyster. Her fans still fawn over her, often begging her to return to sluttier roles. “There’s still plenty of time” for that, she’s tweeted.

What Is Susan Sarandon’s Net Worth?
