United States Ranks Outside Top 10 Countries For ‘Happiness’

The rankings are compared against a hypothetical dystopia, although the last couple of years have been close to replicating dystopian living.


Citizens of 15 other countries are happier than Americans, according to the latest edition of the World Happiness report.

For the past 10 years, the report has used annual survey data with responses from thousands of people in 150 countries. This year’s report uses survey data from the Gallup World Poll from 2019 to 2021. The Gallup World Poll measures levels of GDP, life expectancy, generosity, social support, freedom, and corruption. It then compares them to the benchmark country — a hypothetical dystopia that has the world’s lowest levels in these categories.

For the fifth year in a row, Finland ranks as the happiest country on the planet. The US ranks #16 – up from #19 last year. This, despite the fact that another Gallup poll released in early February of this year indicates that Americans are the unhappiest they’ve been in 50 years.

Here are the top 20 happiest countries according to the World Happiness report:

2. Denmark (7.636)
3. Iceland (7.557)
4. Switzerland (7.512)
5. Netherlands (7.415)
6. Luxembourg (7.404)
7. Sweden (7.384)
8. Norway (7.365)
9. Israel (7.364)
10. New Zealand (7.200)
11. Austria (7.163)
12. Australia (7.162)
13. Ireland (7.041)
14. Germany (7.034)
15. Canada (7.025)
16. United States (6.977)
17. United Kingdom (6.943)
18. Czechia (6.920)
19. Belgium (6.805)
20. France (6.687)

War-torn countries typiclly rank toward the bottom of the list. Afghanistan ranked 150th. Russia and Ukraine ranked 80th and 98th, respectively, but those numbers are expected to change in the next report.
