Wells Fargo Whistleblowers Say Company Performed Fake Diversity Interviews On Already Filled Positions

The latest Big Banking scandal involves Wells Fargo, as a series of whistleblowers have claimed racially discriminatory practices. Emily Flitter of The New York Times reports that seven current and former employees claim that the bank carried out fake interviews.

The whistleblowers claim that the bank issued an instruction to interview people of color and women for already filled positions.

These interviews were allegedly carried out without any intention of considering the interviewees for the actual jobs. Rather, they were performed as a way of creating an image of making efforts to create diversity.

One of the whistleblowers is Joe Bruno. He was an executive for Wells Fargo until he was fired as what he purports was a form of retaliation.

Bruno told higher-ups that the fake interviews were “inappropriate, morally wrong, ethically wrong.” He says his concerns were not taken seriously and he was fired.

However, Wells Fargo reported to The Times that Bruno was let go because of conduct issues.

This is not the first time that Wells Fargo has been accused of racism and discrimination. The company’s CEO, Charles Scharf, once doubled-down on his claim that “the unfortunate reality is that there is a very limited pool of black talent to recruit from.”

Scharf’s comments come across as categorically untrue and devoid of any intention to acknowledge the wealth of knowledge that comes from hiring diverse employees. He eventually issued an apology.

As a result, Wells Fargo created a hiring policy that was supposed to focus on diversity.

But it seems the bank has not followed through on its claims to create “Workforce diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

A spokesperson for Wells Fargo says that the company is currently performing an internal review after the whistleblower fake interview allegations. They said, “the nature of the allegations in the story seriously and, as a company, we do not tolerate the type of conduct alleged.”
