Where Is the 8-Year-Old with a Higher IQ Than Einstein and Hawking?

An 8-year-old girl with autism went viral a few years ago when her family discovered that she had an IQ of 162. That’s higher than both Albert Einstein’s and Stephen Hawking’s IQs, which were both estimated to be 160. Now 11 years old, young Adhara Pérez is completing two master’s degrees and hopes to become an astronaut.

Adhara Pérez Was Bullied in School Because of Autism Before Her Mom Discovered Her IQ Is Higher Than Einstein’s

Adhara Pérez was born on August 28, 2011, in Veracruz, Mexico and raised in the slums of Tláhuac. She was naturally gifted and learned how to read by age 2. But she also struggled with her social interactions and was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome at age 3. Speaking to the Yucatan Times, Adhara and her mom said her peers bullied her because she was different.

“I [was] made a mockery at school,” said Adhara.

Adhara’s mom, Nallely Sanchez, said that the bullying and a lack of understanding among her daughter’s teachers made school miserable. Her teachers reported that Adhara wasn’t interested in learning and would sleep during class.

“I saw that Adhara was playing in a little house and they locked her up. And they started to chant: ‘oddball, weirdo!’, And then they started hitting the little house. So, I said, I don’t want her to suffer,” she told the Yucatan Times. “And she told me that she didn’t want to go to school anymore and fell into a very deep depression.”

That’s when Nallely decided to seek an alternate opinion. She had Adhara tested at the Talent Care Center and discovered she was a genius. Adhara was only 4 years old at the time. It turns out that it was a combination of her daughter’s autism and high IQ that made her hard to understand.

Pérez Was Pursuing 2 Master’s Degrees by Age 8

Despite struggling with autism, her IQ helped her blow right past her peers. By age 5, Adhara Pérez graduated from elementary school. By age 6, she’d finished middle school. And by age 8, the prodigy had graduated from high school. She promptly decided to pursue studies in astrophysics at UNAM’s Institute of Astronomy while simultaneously enrolling at Universidad CNCI in Mexico to study Industrial Engineering.

Vogue Mexico did a feature on Adhara Pérez when she was still 8 years old. At the time, she was working on developing a smart bracelet that monitors people’s emotions. She hopes that the bracelet can help detect potential crises that people with disabilities (such as autism) may experience, such as panic attacks, convulsions, or seizures. Pérez was also listed as one of Forbes Mexico’s 100 most powerful women. And she’s written a book about her life (so far!) that translates to “Do Not Give Up.”

Despite Issues Obtaining a U.S. Visa, Adhara Is Set on Getting to NASA

According to the Daily Kos, the young genius prodigy was offered a scholarship to the University of Arizona after she expressed interest in attending. However, due to issues obtaining a U.S. visa, she hasn’t been able to go yet.

But that doesn’t seem to be holding Adhara back from achieving her dreams.

“If you don’t like where you are, imagine where you want to be, I see myself in NASA so it’s worth a try,” she wrote on Instagram.

She’s on a mission, and hopefully, that brings her to NASA, the moon, the stars, or wherever she wants to be. And in the meantime, this girl genius is proving that autism doesn’t have to hold you back. She’s nothing short of an inspiration.
