Retired four-star general and former Secretary of State Colin Powell says Hillary Clinton is trying to link him to her email scandal.
During a weekend event in the Hamptons, Powell told People magazine that Clinton’s “people have been trying to pin it” on him. Powell comment was in response to a New York Times story that indicated that Clinton told the FBI that Powell was the one who told her to use a private email server, something he had done for unclassified messages.
“The truth is, she was using (the private email server) for a year before I sent her a memo telling her what I did,” Powell said.
The Times reported that a State Department inspector general report released in May said that Powell and other senior officials did use personal email for official business. However, by the time Clinton took the post, the rules clearly indicated using a private server was not allowed due to security issues.
When asked why he believed Clinton named him in her email saga, Powell replied, “why do you think?”
“It doesn’t bother me. But it’s okay; I’m free,” Powell said.
Powell, who endorsed Barack Obama, has not made an endorsement in this year’s presidential race.
