Donald Trump may want to build a wall to keep crying babies out of his rallies Twitter/NBC News

Donald Trump held a campaign rally in Ashburn, Va., Tuesday, where he touched on a number of topics. But it’s what happened off the stage that’s making news. As Trump was talking about China’s currency, he was interrupted by a crying baby in the crowd.

After initially telling the mother not to worry about the baby because he “loves babies,” Trump said he was kidding when he heard the baby cry a second time.

“Don’t worry about that baby. I love babies,” Politico reports Trump said. “Don’t worry about it. I love babies. I hear that baby crying, I like it. What a baby. What a beautiful baby. Don’t worry, don’t worry. The mom’s running around like — don’t worry about it, you know. It’s young and beautiful and healthy, and that’s what we want.”

“They have ripped us to shreds, ripped us absolutely to shreds,” Trump continued his train of thought about China. Then, he heard another cry.

“Actually, I was only kidding, you can get the baby out of here,” he said as the audience laughed.

“That’s all right. Don’t worry. I, I think she really believed me that I love having a baby crying while I’m speaking. That’s OK. People don’t understand. That’s OK.”

CBS reporter Sopan Deb says a second baby was also heard crying at the rally.

Some on Twitter believe Trump was joking, while others called his character into question.
