During a Jeb! donors huddle, George W. Bush announced his disgust with Ted Cruz, who responded by thanking Bush for his wife.
According to Politico, at the fundraiser George W. Bush took time between bragging on the Bush network, off-the-cuff jokes, and analysis of Jeb Bush’s campaign to bash Cruz. He summed it up as “I just don’t like that guy.”
“I was like, ‘Holy sh-t, did he just say that?’” one donor told Politico. “I remember looking around and seeing that other people were also looking around surprised.”
Bush’s frustration with Cruz stems from his “opportunistic” apparent alliance with Trump. In Bush’s opinion Cruz has been sucking up to Trump, and by doing so avoided being a target of stinging criticisms, so the former president decided to remedy that.
Or maybe Bush just felt betrayed. Donors said he described Cruz as having hijacked the Republican Party of Texas and the Republican Party in Washington. Clearly this is not the kind of behavior Bush expected from a former domestic policy adviser on his 2000 campaign.
The “opportunistic” “suck up” who Bush just doesn’t like responded by agreeing that he understands he poses a threat to Jeb Bush, but forgives George W. Bush because “I met my wife Heidi working on his campaign, and so I will always be grateful to him.”
