When the mother of a military veteran identified herself as such at a Mike Pence rally in Nevada on Monday, the crowd cheered for her.
This isn’t totally untypical of the American response to veterans and their families.
But then she spoke up and asked Pence about the inflammatory rhetoric Trump sometimes uses against the military, specifically the family of a Muslim Army captain who was killed in action during the Iraq War.
“Time and time again, Trump has disrespected our nation’s armed forces and veterans, and his disrespect for Mr. Khan and his family is just an example,” the woman said.

“You’ve got a son in the military — how do you tolerate this disrespect?”
And then the crowd started to boo her.
Gov. Pence calmed everyone down before saying that the woman and crowd had both shown off the best parts of freedom.
“That’s what freedom looks like and that’s what freedom sounds like,” he said.
Pence then honored the memory of Capt. Humayan Khan.
Khan’s parents were thrown into the national spotlight last week after they gave a speech that criticized Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention.
