House Approves Measure for Nationwide Access to Birth Control, Bill Goes to Senate

The Department of Justice to make sure such rights aren’t restricted.

Some Democrats have suggested that Republican-led states are threatening to restrict contraception after the overturning of Roe v. Wade — but members of Congress are taking steps to make sure that doesn’t happen.

How so? By guaranteeing access to birth control at the federal level.

This idea was put in place after the House passed the Right to Contraception Act — which will guarantee access to birth control and providers of birth control to prescribe it. The list includes IUDs, Plan B and birth-control pills.

Along with that, such legislation would allow the Department of Justice to make sure such rights aren’t restricted.

“It’s unbelievable that in 2022 we should have to explain that access to birth control is about equality,” said Rep. Kathy Manning, D – North Carolina. “This extremism is about one thing — control of women. We will not let this happen; we will not play defense anymore. This time we are playing offense.”

Meanwhile, Republicans say they are not opposed to birth control, though some seem to believe this particular bill may be taking it too far.

“This bill endangers the health and safety of women,” said Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R – Washington. “It allows Planned Parenthood and abortion providers to prescribe on and off label drugs to be used for abortions without any restrictions.”

So needless to say, the bill now faces an uphill fight as it heads to Senate.
