Twenty-six year old Mohamad Khweis of Alexandria, Va., surrendered to Kurdish authorities in March, after reportedly joining ISIS in Iraq. Khweis is now back on U.S. soil and is charged with providing material support to ISIS.

While he was in Kurdish custody, he told his captors he was a Palestinian-American. Khweis said he left Virginia and traveled to Turkey, where he met an Iraqi girl. The two crossed into Syria before going to Mosul.

He now says it wasn’t a smart move.

“I made a bad decision to go […] to Mosul,” Khweis told Kurdistan24 news. “At the time I made the decision, I was not thinking straight. On the way there I regretted, and I wanted to go back home after things didn’t work out and saw myself living in such an environment.”

While Khweis didn’t say why he joined ISIS, he did mention that it was rough.

“I stayed there about a month, and I found it very, very hard to live there. I decided to return back home,” Khweis said.
