Haskins was walking on a Florida interstate last month when he was struck and killed. The incident happened on I-595 near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport just before dawn on April 9. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office said that Haskins’ blood alcohol content was 0.20, which would be 2.5 times the 0.08 legal limit for driving.

Haskins was on the phone with his wife, Kalabrya who was still Pittsburgh, shortly before he was struck. He told her that he had run out of gas — a story that was confirmed when the police discovered his vehicle nearby, without gas.

Witnesses to the accident said that he was trying to flag down cars and was standing in the center lane of the highway when he was hit by the truck and then an SUV. The coroner report said he died of blunt force trauma.

Haskins was a star at Ohio State, setting several school passing records and being named the MVP in both the Big Ten Championship game and in the Rose Bowl.

He became a No. 1 draft pick by Washington that following season, though he was released by the team after going 3-10 over two seasons. Haskins was signed by Pittsburgh and didn’t appear in a game last season though was expected to compete for playing time with Mitchell Trubisky and recent draft pick, Kenny Pickett.
