Olympic medal-winning volleyball player Kim Glass has revealed some pretty nasty facial abrasions, suffered after a random homeless man threw a pipe at her in Los Angeles.
Glass, 37, said she at first feared she might go blind as a result of the injuries.
“I do have multiple fractures,” she said, joking that “yes, I look like ET.”
Along with representing the Team USA volleyball team, Glass has done some modeling, making her way to the pages of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue.
She said she was having lunch in LA when the homeless man “just ran up” and “looked at me with some pretty hateful eyes.”
The man was eventually apprehended by police.
“As I turned to tell my friend, ‘I think something’s wrong with him and I think he’s going to hit the car’ — before I knew it, a big metal bolt-like pipe hit me,” she said. “It happened so fast. He literally flung it from the street. It kinda took me down and out.”
Other nearby “got him and held him down until the cops came,” she added.
Glass made a second video about the incident, encouraging the general public to stay alert.
“Guys, just be safe out there … there’s a lot of mentally ill people on these streets right now,” she said. “You shouldn’t have to be fearful when you walk, but it’s true. You guys just be safe, OK.”
