Tiger Woods, the legendary golfer with 15 major championship wins, apologized on Thursday during the first round of the Genesis Invitational, where he handed a tampon to his golfer Justin Thomas. After the second round on Friday at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, Woods clarified that he had no intention of causing offense to anyone.

“It was supposed to be all fun and games and obviously it hasn’t turned out that way,” Woods stated.

“If I offended anybody, it was not the case, it was just friends having fun. As I said, if I offended anybody in any way, shape or form, I’m sorry. It was not intended to be that way. It was just we play pranks on one another all the time and virally I think this did not come across that way, but between us it was – it’s different.”

Woods handed Thomas a tampon after outdriving his playing partner on the ninth hole. Lucikly, Thomas quickly discarded the tampon as the two laughed and hugged it off. Social media users went on to criticize the golfer saying the incident was sexist, with England women’s soccer manager Sarina Wiegman telling reporters Saturday: “It is very inappropriate, and I think he has realized that.”

“If tiger spent three months a year bleeding and coping with period pain, they’d make a whole-ass documentary about how champions overcome insurmountable obstacles,” Alex McDaniel, managing editor of USA Today’s For The Win, tweeted.

Despite struggling to maintain his form, Woods managed to make the cut after being one over par in the first two rounds of the Genesis Invitational. After sustaining severe leg injuries in a car accident two years ago, Woods has been on quite a difficult road to recovery. His appearance in this year’s Genesis Invitational is his first official tournament since The Open Championship back in July and his first non-major PGA Tour event since the ZOZO Championship in October 2020.

The tournament continues through Sunday.
