Back in 1979, Willie Nelson joined forces with music legend Leon Russell to record the No. 1 countrified cover of Elvis’ “Heartbreak Hotel.” Shortly afterward, they went on the road, with some of the songs they played together on tour being recorded for their collaborative album “One for the Road.”

Their friendship grew through the years, as the two would often reunite onstage for Willie’s annual Fourth of July picnic. This year, Willie and Leon were set to reunite on Aug. 1 and 2 in Kansas at the Stiefel Theatre and the Topeka Performing Arts Center.

Yet, that reunion looks like it will have to wait.

Leon, who turned 74 in April 2016, suffered a heart attack recently and is currently waiting to undergo surgery in Nashville, according to “Tulsa World.” Currently in stable condition, Leon has been forced to postpone a number of shows, with a statement from management stating that “he’ll need to recuperate for several weeks” but is “optimistic” for a full recovery. Leon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2011.

Everyone here at Rare Country offers our most heartfelt wishes for a full recovery.
