Southwest Airlines Pilot Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Fire Fills Cabin with Smoke

It’s a bird … it’s a plane … or maybe a little bit of both.

Actually, it was a bird that ran into a plane, forcing the plane to turn back to come from where it once came. The plane was en route to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., but the bird had other ideas.

And after the bird hit the Southwest Airlines flight, video revealed that the cabin began to fill with smoke caused by an engine fire.

The bird may or may not have survived, but the Southwest pilots wanted to make sure the passengers did. So he turned around and made an emergency landing.

A Scary Moment For All!

A video recorded by a passenger on a cell phone has been widely shared on social media, revealing thick smoke inside the aircraft and emergency oxygen masks hanging from some of the seats. The footage also shows passengers evacuating the plane via emergency inflatable slides on the airport’s runway. According to Steven Rodriguez, one of the passengers, the initial impact of the incident sounded like a large explosion.

These pilots made the right decision, a Southwest spokesperson indicated.

“The pilots safely returned to Havana where the 147 customers and six crew evacuated the aircraft via slides due to smoke in the cabin,” the spokesperson said, via People.

“The customers and crew were bussed to the terminal and are being accommodated on alternative flights to Fort Lauderdale.”

So, it all ended well for everyone, thankfully.

Well, everyone, we presume, but the bird. Which is tragic, but it was defiantly a scary situation for all. I would be terrified to fly again if this happened to me.
