High-tech glasses allow blind woman to see newborn son

Kathy Beitz has been legally blind since she was a child. So it makes sense, poetically, that the first baby she sees would be her own.

The company eSight loaned Beitz a pair of their glasses designed for the blind so she could see her newborn baby. In the video, posted by her sister Yvonne (also legally blind), Beitz gets a good look at her newborn son.

“I love his lips because they’re my lips,” she said, marveling at her son’s features, from head to toe. “For the first baby that I actually get to look at is very overwhelming and even to look at my husband looking at him was such a good feeling. I got to fall in love with him.”

The eSight glasses allow the legally blind to see everything from faces to newspapers to concerts, but it’s not cheap. A single pair runs $15,000, according to the maker’s website. You can also support other legally blind people like Beitz who would like to get the eSight for themselves.
