If you’ve ever fried anything in oil, you know that the nasty cooking smell can linger for a long time after your food is served.

Fortunately, there are ways to eliminate the odor before it overpowers your home. Here are some tips from Insider.

Crack a window: Before you pour the oil, open your windows and (in the summer) turn up the air conditioning.

Close the door: Seal off the entrances to other rooms, especially bedrooms and bathrooms, so the smell doesn’t permeate the entire house.

Clean up: As soon as your food has finished cooking, get rid of the used oil, and clean up any pots and pans you used.

If your house still has that sour, oily smell after dinner, there are a couple things you can use to make it fade away:

  • Vinegar: Combine 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of vinegar in a small saucepan. Bring them to a boil and let the mixture simmer for a few minutes.
    • Feel free to add rosemary, vanilla extract, lemon peels or other ingredients to replace the oil smell with a pleasant one.
  • Coffee grounds: Leave a bowl of them on the counter overnight to absorb the odor.
  • Cookies: Like you need an excuse! The smell of baking cookies will overpower that of the oil — what could be better?
