Ah, autumn. The brisk air, the apple cider, the changing leaves…and, hey, television is back! Here are some shows that weʼre excited about watching:
Amelia’s picks:
Reign
I love history. I love Scotland. In fact, I love them so much that I went to college in Scotland to study history. Add in a little CW-style salaciousness and come killer costumes, and I think Iʼll be hooked on Reign. I am completely willing to turn a blind eye to the historical inaccuracies that will be sure to come up (as long as theyʼre little) in the name of entertainment. Come on, CW, donʼt let me down.
Dracula
Dracula looks like pure sumptuousness. It features great actors, and was shot on gorgeous locations in Hungary, so you know it will be pretty. Itʼs written by the amazing Daniel Knauf (remember Carnivale? That was him!) and offers a new twist on the classic tale. In this take, Count Dracula is working with Van Helsing against those who made him a vampire. Dracula promises great writing, a feast for the eyes, and sex appeal galore. Something to sink our teeth into (bad pun completely intended).
About a Boy
I donʼt usually like movies or stories that have anything to do with feelings. They are always so heavy handed that I donʼt even care what happens to the characters as long as the show ends quickly to put me out of my misery. However, the movie version of About a Boy was done with so much humor that I couldnʼt help but fall in love with it. I hope the TV show brings the same lighthearted approach to some serious subject matter. A great movie that I have high hopes for translating onto the small screen.
Nashville
Nashville is one of my guilty pleasures, and not just because Connie Britton should be in everything always. ALWAYS. The casting is great, of course, but the dialogue is surprisingly funny at times for a show that could veer much too far into soap opera territory. So far, theyʼve managed to keep the stories from going over the line. It’s also nice to see a show that doesnʼt take place in New York or Los Angeles; Nashville is a refreshing change of scenery. Toss in some great music (Gunnar and Scarlettʼs collaborations!), and youʼve got one of the best shows out there. Fingers crossed that it doesnʼt jump the shark into soap opera in season two.
Tabitha’s picks:
The Voice
One of the best music reality shows out there. The level of talent is high than American Idol or any of the other “talent” based shows out there… and who doesn’t love Blake Shelton? I also don’t think I’m alone in being grateful for the return of Christina and Cee-Lo. Shakira and Usher just don’t compete. Here’s to another season of getting way too invested in contestants and Blake and Adam’s bromance.
Sleepy Hollow
Let’s be honest, Ichabod Crane is basically a Tea Partier. How awesome to have a character around to remind us how far we have fallen! From pointing out how absurd it is to pay a $.41 tax on donuts to his rants about unreasonable search and seizure, this is straight up libertarian propaganda and it is delightful.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
I mean, blockbuster sized action flick on the small screen… this has potential. It promises to be witty and fun, but action packed. The Marvel world has a fun, tongue in cheek quality that the much darker DC world doesn’t have, and TV needs more of that. Some were disappointed to see the lack of actual super heroes in it, but the agents seem awesome enough to make it work. Also, Brett Dalton is in it, which never hurt anything.
