This is not an April Fools joke. Skidmore College, a private liberal arts college in Saratoga Springs believes it can capitalize on a topic that greatly interests Millennials, but more importantly, intelligently discuss the psychological and sociological phenomenon Cyrus is to those who love and hate her.
The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender and Media is a 251-level special electives course that will be taught by visiting assistant professor Carolyn Chernoff and focus on how Cyrus has revolutionized the portrayal of these areas in culture.
Chernoff claimed to have stumbled upon the idea after teaching a course on youth culture that included a video of Cyrus twerking at the 2013 Music Awards.
Race will be one point of discussion, Chernoff noted. “Miley is white but wants to appropriate a black sound. She doesn’t discuss her white privilege.”
“Miley is a lens into cultural conflict,” the professor said.
