There were loud cheers this week when Master Seaman Francis Legare embraced his partner, Corey Vautour, after more than eight months away.

“I have been away for 255 days, so it feels great,” Legare said. “I am speechless.”

The HMCS Winnipeg returned to Victoria Tuesday, after a tour in the Caribbean and the Pacific.

Legare was the first sailor to disembark, which is a time-honored tradition. He’s the first male to kiss his same-sex partner in Canadian Navy history.

Sailors put their names in a raffle for a chance to be the first off their ship and into their loved one’s arms.
