OAHU, HAWAII — A dramatic video shot by a drone captured the moment a dog was swept off a rocky cliff by an enormous wave. It happened in Hawaii Kai at remote China Walls, a spot popular for cliff diving among swimmers.

The drone footage, shot by pilot Donnie Klotz, shows the dog standing on a ledge down the side of the cliff when a gigantic wave comes by. The dog scrambles to get up the wall but it’s too late: the dog is swept out into Maunalua Bay.

Klotz tells Hawaii News Now: “The dog was on the ledge because he followed the owner down. The owner jumped off the ledge at China Walls. The dog went down one level and was just, you know, looking for his owner.”

Fortunately, the dog was able to swim to its owner, who is believed to be the man in the video seen in the water helping the dog back to shore.
China Walls is known for their dangerous waves, with warning signs posted at the front of the park.  A 23-year-old man was killed in January after getting too close to the edge and being swept away by a passing wave.
