Sometimes, reporters don’t just tell you about the news. They can occasionally save you from becoming it. Such was the case in Florida during the flood waters that resulted from Hurricane Ian, as a television news reporter rescued a woman from her car.

The reporter was Tony Atkins of WESH-TV in Daytona Beach. The woman was a nurse who was stuck in her vehicle in downtown Orlando while on her way to work.

The woman, Tonya McCullough, was waving and asking for help when Atkins and the camera crew took notice. They quickly responded, with Atkins carrying her on his back to safety.
Atkins eventually shared a video of himself removing his rain boots and dumping out all the water inside of it. “New Socks, who dis?” he captioned the tweet.
He also linked to the video of the incident on the WESH website.

Later, Atkins and McCullough had a chance to reconnect under better circumstances.
“Thank you,” she said. “I didn’t get a chance to say thank you in all the madness, I appreciate you.”
She admitted that trying to get to work was perhaps not the safest idea, but she was trying to do the right thing.
“It was dark and rainy and gloomy, and you have no idea how deep that was,” she said. “I realized I can’t drive through this and I tried to back up, the water is filling up the inside of the car.”
