A woman in Lenexa, Kan. had been held captive and raped in an apartment by her boyfriend, 34-year-old Anthony Allen, for four months before she was finally able to alert someone to what was going on through a note.

KHBS reported that the woman put an note into her rent envelope, which was read by apartment manager Beth Galley. The manager worked with the police and maintenance worker Mychael Reyes to rescue the victim, who was held in the apartment from April 1 to August 2.
Reyes told KHBS that he was afraid to knock on her door, since he didn’t know if Allen was armed, but he did so Sunday.
“You know, I was nervous because I didn’t know if the guy had a gun or a knife, but I went over there and knocked on the door, and I said, ‘Maintenance,’ and got her outside, and said the downstairs below is leaking,” he said.
Reyes said that Allen was staring at him from a couch.
The woman ran to safety almost as soon as Reyes showed up at the door and announced the fake plumbing problem.
Allen refused to come out of the apartment and negotiated with police for four hours, but he eventually surrendered and was arrested.
Reyes said that the woman was relieved but visibly shaken and crying.
“When I said go downstairs […] she didn’t even hesitate,” he said. “She looked so relieved and at the same time she was shaking really bad and started crying.”
The victim and Allen originally met in Kansas, moved to Minnesota and then moved back to Kansas.
Allen has been charged with two counts of rape and one count of kidnapping and is being held on $500,000 bond.
