Albea was playing a video game, Mortal Kombat, with X’Zavion Charleston on Sept. 14, 2011 when the child said a curse word. Albea responded by punching the baby in the stomach repeatedly, causing internal bleeding and ruptured organs.
Doctors tried to save the child but could not.
He was taken to Children’s Memorial Hospital.
Zooming ahead to 2015, Albea, who is now 22, has been sentenced to 33 years without the possibility of release for good behavior after being convicted of first-degree murder.
According to the New York Daily News, Albea apologized to the Charleston family Friday.
“I’d like to apologize to the family for the pain and suffering this situation has brought about,” he said.
The family is not satisfied, however, with the sentencing.
“I’m outraged he got 33 years,” the toddler’s aunt Sheena Adams told the Chicago Tribune. “My nephew was 3 years old. He will never see school or drive a car. The defendant will be out when he is 50.”
