Matthew McConaughey, who was born in Uvalde, Texas, is imploring Americans to
reassess their values in the wake of the mass shooting in his hometown. The horrific attack yesterday at Robb Elementary School has left 21 dead: two teachers and 19 students. It is the deadliest grade school shooting since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.
“Once again, we have tragically proven that we are failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us,” McConaughey wrote in the official statement, posted to his social media. Calling on Americans to ask themselves, “‘What is it that we truly value? How do we repair the problem?'” he goes on to state that “This is an epidemic we can control.”

With many celebrities and politicians speaking up to condemn the violence, messages like McConaughey’s are imbued with a renewed sense urgency. They also, inherently, political. McConaughey openly flirted with running for governor of Texas last year, and many fans are wondering whether the famous Texan may, again, be considering state politics.
For now, though, the actor is mourning along with his hometown: “To those who dropped off their loved ones at school today not knowing it was goodbye, no words can comprehend or heal your loss, but if prayers can provide comfort, we will keep them coming.”
