The University of Southern Maine experienced a bit of an uproar after education professor, Christy Hammer, stated the following: There are only two sexes. That would be male, and female, Hammer remarked, causing the backlash among her graduate students.

Now, keep in mind that Hammer wasn’t decrying transgenderism. She was just indicating that you are either a man…or a woman.

One woman who identifies as “non-binary” was among those offended after she herself asked Hammer how many sexes there were. Hammer answered “two.”

The woman told Fox News she felt as if Hammer’s answer of “two” was a “personal attack.”

“I let her know I didn’t think she was qualified to teach a class about positive learning environments,” the student said. “It’s the ultimate irony.”

Students then staged a walkout and demanded that Hammer be dismissed. But Hammer isn’t going anywhere, the school said.

“We have developed an alternative plan for this class and will be opening a new section of this course for those students who would like to move,” university spokesperson Gina Marie Guadagnino said, via the New York Post. “The original section taught by professor Hammer will continue for any student who wishes to remain in that class.”

While some students have joined the protest, there are many students on campus who either don’t care about Hammer’s take on genders, or agree with her, per multiple local reports.
