What happened: According to ABC affiliate KTRK-TV, the incident happened at the Houston based KFFO Afro Steakhouse on August 8. Authorities discovered 34-year-old Jessie Mobley Jr. dead. Employees had allegedly carried the man outside after he collapsed at his table.
Although he was unresponsive, they had allegedly believed he “was possibly a homeless person and carried him outside, along with his belongings.” Management allegedly thought he had fallen asleep and did not call 911.
But the steakhouse made a fatal error. Mobley had not been homeless, and he wasn’t asleep. The man was in need of medical attention. Sadly, it wasn’t until the next morning that someone noticed Mobley outside and called emergency services.
Steakhouse Controversy
Mobley was already dead. He had died just a week before his 35th birthday.
“At this time there is no belief Mobley was the victim of a crime,” the HPD said in its Aug. 11 news release.
Family speaks out: Now, Mobley’s family is calling out the steakhouse for failing to call for help. They said that employees should have sought help for the dying man.
- “If they would’ve looked at this bag and seen medicine, wouldn’t they think, prescription medicines, wouldn’t they think? Well, maybe he has a problem? Call somebody?” Mobley Sr. told KTRK-TV. Mobley had HIV, which he treated with medication.
- Meanwhile, stepmom Renee also said, “We just think if somebody had gotten him some help instead of putting him on the sidewalk — called 911 if nothing else – if you don’t know what is wrong with someone, you shouldn’t assume.”
- The family tried to create a memorial at the spot he died, but someone tore it down. His aunt asked, “Everybody does it on the side of the road, why can’t I do it here?”
It’s a sad situation that the man died at the steakhouse and no one thought to get him help.
