Despite launching to mixed reviews, Taylor Swift’s latest album surpasses Adele’s famed title of biggest debut in the history of the US. But it did so in an underhanded manner by releasing dozens of different versions.

Destined For Success: Swifties are some of the most obsessive fans in the music industry. Taylor Swift could blow her nose on an old napkin, hang it in a gallery, and they would herald it a masterpiece. The album launch played on Swifties’ FOMO by launching multiple versions.

• When Taylor Swift announced The Life of A Showgirl album on her now fiancé’s podcast, it garnered half a billion views. The launch event film, which contains the kind of footage you used to get free on a CD, sold $15 million of tickets in 24 hours. The album was pre-saved 5 million times on Spotify. She could have released an album of heavy breathing, and her fans would still have flocked to buy it.
• But did they get their money’s worth? Sadly, her album wasn’t even that creative. Despite early reviews singing its praises, on release, the album garnered mixed reviews. Some Swifties called it both droll and uninspired.

But Taylor Swift still sold more than 4 million copies of the new album, and she did it by making more than 40 different versions.

Which One’s The Right One?

Having numerous versions of a single album release isn’t unheard of, but nobody does it like Taylor Swift. She has, at the time of writing, released a total of 41 different variations of her The Life of A Showgirl album.

It’s a clever way to eke out as much of her tween audience’s pocket money as possible. Of course, they all want the best album. They want the most complete experience. If that means buying multiple copies, then so be it. It appears that Swifties more than paid up, making the album a rousing success profit-wise. Maybe Swift will buy a brand new jet.
