According to a report by 10 WJAR, Rhode Island’s Attorney General is still determining an appropriate professional punishment for Special Assistant Attorney General Deven Hogan Flanagan.
Police revealed bodycam footage of Hogan Flanagan and her friend Veronica Hannan. Staff at an eatery on Bannister’s Wharf wanted the pair removed for trespassing. They refused to comply, and a messy argument ensued, resulting in both women ending up in the back of police cars. During the altercation, Hogan Flanagan declared, “I’m an AG” multiple times. The officer replied, “Good for you. I don’t give a ****, let’s go.”
Hogan Flanagan also told the officer to turn his bodycam off. She said, “I want you to turn your bodycam off. The protocol is that you turn it off. It’s a citizen request that you turn it off.” A law enforcement expert confirmed to 10 WJAR that no such policy exists.
The Attorney General Says His Colleague Embarrassed Herself
NewsTalk 99.7 released a small portion of their show on Facebook where they spoke with Rhode Island’s Attorney General, Peter Neronha. “She’s put me in a bad situation. She’s embarrassed herself, humiliated herself, and treated the Newport Police Department horribly,” he said. Neronha admitted, “I don’t know what I’m going to do about that yet. I have to give it some more thought.” He said his colleague “knows better” and confirms there will be a “strong, strong, sanction.”
Gene Valicenti, the show host, asks Neronha if he knew anything about the events inside the eatery. Neronha didn’t reveal many details but did say, “I think it’s alcohol related.” Per 10 WJAR, he also said, “There will be a suspension without pay if I retain her, for sure. So she’s not going to continue as if nothing happened.” He added, “She’s going to have a long time coming back from this. It’s just really unfortunate.”
Neronha also reportedly said Hogan Flanagan would apologize to the Newport Police.
