Hot tubs are pretty heavy, even when they’re not full of water. Unloading them from the back of a trailer and into a backyard takes some careful planning. But, it appears a few safety regulations were skipped when, while trying to load a hot tub into a New Jersey backyard, the crane carrying it came crashing through a house.

Utter Destruction: Residents of Lea Drive in Hamilton Township of New Jersey, were enjoying a peaceful Tuesday afternoon. Nothing of note was happening, bar a hot tub delivery to one of the local back yards. But, the peace was shattered as the sound of creaking, followed by an enormous crash, rang out over the residences.

  • “I heard a crash and people yelling. I didn’t connect it. You don’t think anything is going to crash through your neighbor’s house,” Stephanie Dimeglio, a neighbor, said.

A Lucky Escape

Thankfully, despite the destruction of the house, the crane carrying the hot tub didn’t hurt anyone. Somehow, everyone got out of the way of the 30-ton moving equipment. As it came down, the workers and bystanders had time to flee.

  • “They recognized the shift in the weight of the crane itself and the person quickly removed themself from the hazard,” the local fire chief said of the crane operator.
  • The mayor also praised the other employees sharp eyes. “”You had some workers in the rear saying, ‘Left, right, up, down.’ They scattered once they started to realize it came down on the house.”

Although nobody was hurt, the destruction to property was pretty severe. The collapsing crane came down on top of a home and the hot tub was obliterated. It was up to the construction teams to clean up and repair what they could.

  • There was an incoming rain storm expected soon after the disaster. Thankfully, they managed to cover the gaping hole in the roof before it blew in. However, the owner of the house is not going to be best pleased with their unexpected renovation.
