According to a press release from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened on August 13 at Coppergate Elementary School. A student reportedly “opened their backpack and discovered a gun inside of it.” Staff at the school quickly notified the authorities. Officials confiscated the weapon when they arrived and placed the school in a “Secure Status.” The Sheriff’s Office clarifies that this status allows lessons to continue without disruption, but nobody can enter or leave the school grounds.
During their investigation, authorities discovered that the boy’s parents do not live together. The mother reportedly put the gun in her son’s backpack and asked him to give it to his father before they left for school. The dad picked up his son, but was unaware that the weapon was in the bag; thus, it ended up in the school.
Officers Arrested The Mom On Multiple Charges
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office identified the mom as Sierra Bronner. Officers arrested her and charged her with child neglect and giving a firearm to a minor. Authorities reportedly took Bronner to Clay County Jail without incident.
Sheriff Michelle Cook warned, “It’s crucial that parents know what their children are bringing to school before they leave home. Look in their backpacks, ask questions, and have conversations on what’s appropriate to bring to school.” She added, “In this specific case, this was a poor decision and could’ve ended in tragedy. I’m grateful for our partnership with Clay County District Schools and applaud our school resource deputies and detectives for their work to keep our students safe.”
Earlier this year, the University of Central Florida’s Student Care Services reported a 29-year-old woman to the authorities. She allegedly called the front desk and said, “I’m gonna ******* blow you guys up,” before quickly hanging up. She didn’t answer when they called back, but discovered her identity thanks to her voicemail box and number on the University student files.
Kristin Galli told authorities, “I thought it would be funny, and I was drunk when I called.” She has a court hearing scheduled later this week.
