What Happened: Exactly what that means remains unknown. It’s unclear if the singer meant that he was just removing his music from Amazon Music’s digital library. Alternatively, Young may have also meant that he was removing physical editions of his music from the shipping platform as well.
The Letter: Let’s take a look at exactly what the singer said about Amazon. Posting on the Neil Young Archives website, Young is calling for a boycott against the popular platform.
- “FORGET AMAZON AND WHOLE FOODS. FORGET FACEBOOK,” the website read. “BUY LOCAL. BUY DIRECT. BEZOS SUPPORTS THIS GOVERNMENT. IT DOES NOT SUPPORT YOU OR ME.”
- “The time is here,” the singer continued. “FORGET AMAZON. Soon my music will not be there. It is easy to buy local. Support your community. Go to the local store. Don’t go back to the big corporations who have sold out America. We all have to give up something to save America from the Corporate Control Age it is entering.”
- He concluded: “They need you to buy from them. Don’t. They shut down our government your income your safety your family’s health security. Take America Back together, stop buying from the big corporations support local business. Do the right thing. Show who you are.”
Amazon Just Latest Target
Previous Removals: In recent months, Young has been quite vocal against corporations. Amazon is just the latest target. Previously, Young ended all promotions for Facebook and Instagram. Young was critical of Meta’s use of chatbots and specifically how they affected children.
He called on the company to be more accountable.
Meanwhile, back in 2022, he removed his music from Spotify to protest Joe Rogan and his podcast. He believed that Rogan was spreading misinformation about COVID-19 and treatments. Young called on the streaming platform to censor or remove Rogan. However, they declined to do so.
“I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform. They can have [Joe] Rogan or Young. Not both,” Young wrote in an open letter.
