What is happening: The parliament building of Nepal is burning amid protests and riots throughout the capital. The population took to the streets as a result of social media sanctions and corruption at a governmental level.

  • Initially, the protestors took to the streets on Monday, the 8th of September. The movement by the disgruntled Nepali population forced the resignation of the country’s prime minister, KP Sharma Oli. In the first days of the protests, 19 people were killed. Today, a further two have been murdered by police.

Numerous places have been targeted in Nepal by the anti-corruption protesters, with the parliament building making headlines as fires rip through the building. As well as the parliament building, Singha Durbar, a location housing many of the offices of the government, including the offices of the former prime minister, has been burnt.

Ongoing Action: Protesters are still filling the streets. Little is being done by the military at this point. Their brutal murders have only made things worse.

According to the BBC, they are asking protestors to exercise restraint.

Why Protestors Burnt the Nepal Parliament Building

Protests: The protests in Nepal that have ultimately resulted in the resignation of the Prime Minister and destruction of the parliament building were sparked due to corruption and sanctions. It has been said that the ‘Nepo Baby’ mentality has pushed people to the edge.

  • Protestors in Nepal claim that the wealthy elite are favoring their children. In an otherwise poor country, the rich retain wealth through nepotistic favoritism. Various posts on social media by the wealthy elite sparked outrage. The rich were often seen flaunting their wealth in the faces of the struggling population of Nepal.

The Spark: Initially, the government banned 26 social media platforms in Nepal. This was allegedly because they failed to meet registration deadlines. However, the protestors claim it was an attempt to silence the anti-corruption dialogue on the open platforms.

As students took to the streets, police shot 19 of them to death. This was the catalyst that resulted in the resignation of the Prime Minister of Nepal and the blaze that still burns in their parliament building.
