According to a news release by the Cheyenne Police Department, officers responded to shots fired at 215 Walterscheid on Saturday at around 3:30 AM. When authorities arrived, they found several people outside the building providing aid to a 23-year-old male. He reportedly had a gunshot wound, and emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene.
In an update, the police department explained that they arrested 20-year-old Jadan Orr for voluntary manslaughter. Orr is an Airman First Class, per CBS News. The police report explains that Orr and his friends had been drinking in the apartment. During the night, he entered a bedroom with two friends.
Authorities claim there was an AK-47 rifle in the room. Orr reportedly charged and fired the gun while “manipulating the firearm.” The bullet went through the wall into the living room and hit the victim in the torso. Police have not revealed the 23-year-old’s identity.
The Wyoming Air Force Base Dealt With Another Firearm-Related Incident In July
The F.E. Warren Air Force Base dealt with another tragedy last month. The base posted a press release about the incident on July 24. 21-year-old Airman Brayden Lovan was reportedly assigned to the 90th Security Forces Squadron, 90th Security Forces Group. He died while on duty on July 20 at around 1:30 AM.
The press release doesn’t share many details, but explains the incident involved a firearm discharge. “Furthermore, Security Forces Combat Arms Airmen at all AFGSC bases will conduct 100% inspections of the M18 handguns to identify any immediate safety concerns,” the release reads. “At this time, no determination has been made regarding the nature of the discharge.”
According to CBS News, base officials announced that an airman was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and making a false statement in connection with the shooting. The outlet reveals that the incident led the US Air Force Global Strike Command to suspend use of the Sig Sauer M18 handgun.
The shooting on Saturday remains under investigation by the Cheyenne Police Department.
