According to a news release by the Atlanta Police Department, the incident occurred on August 20 at around 11:35 PM. Officers responded to an accident at the intersection of Memorial Dr. SE & Boulevard SE. When they arrived, they found the rider of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle unresponsive. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene.
Authorities say a BMW SUV was also involved in the crash, and the female driver stayed on the scene. The news release explains that the investigation remains active, but police believe the BMW driver failed to yield while turning left and collided with the bike. Per KCTV5, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the motorcyclist was 51-year-old Brent Hinds.
Mastodon Has Released A Statement Following The Tragedy
Mastodon addressed the incident on their official Instagram page. “We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident,” the post reads. “We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time.”
A post on Hind’s Instagram account confirms his passing. The musician was due to play a ‘Guitar Masterclass’ in Tennessee in August. “Your reservations will be refunded at the point of purchase,” the post explains.
Hinds was the longstanding lead guitarist of Atlanta rock group Mastodon. Per Metal Storm, the group recorded their first demo in 2000 and quickly soared in popularity. The band was nominated for six Grammy Awards and won ‘Best Metal Performance’ for their hit Sultan’s Curse in 2018.
Mastodon confirmed the mutual decision to part ways with their lead guitarist on Instagram in March. “We’re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we’ve shared, and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors,” they said.
