The Details: Katie Barker, a Tennessee mother, is currently pregnant with twin boys. Clevland 19 shared that she was awoken on Monday, September 19, to flames inside her home. Additionally, those flames had trapped her upstairs. Now, the mother was faced with a difficult decision.
- “It was either risk breaking bones or plan a funeral,” Barker said when speaking to the outlet.
- Barker admitted that she had a 6-year-old daughter, and the two twin boys in her stomach were counting on her. Both of which inspired her to make the brave choice to jump.
- “I just kind of leaned out the window on my side, and I landed on my knee and my hip and my back,” she recalled. Luckily, Soddy-Daisy police officers were on the scene and attempted to ease her fall as best they could.
Pregnant Mother Escapes House Fire, But Not Without Injury
While it was incredible that Barker managed to escape, the pregnant mother did not escape the house fire without injury. According to the family’s GoFundMe Page, Barker “sustained substantial injuries including broken pelvis, compressed vertebrae, and severe smoke inhalation.” However, all of that is better than losing her life.
- Barker confirmed that both twins are doing fine.
- Although broken, Barker’s pelvis is stable, and she is scheduled to start physical therapy soon.
After being rescued from the house fire, Barker told officers that her father-in-law was still inside the home. Without hesitation, they rushed in to save him.
- “As soon as I told the officers, without hesitation or any kind of protection, they ran into the basement, to the den, the bottom, and they got him out,” Barker told Local 12.
Unfortunately, the family’s three beloved cats did not survive the house fire.
