What happened: There are conflicting accounts of what occurred at Alvord High School, but PETA claims they received a complaint about the establishment. It alleges a teacher fed a one-week-old kitten to a snake “in her classroom of 15 to 17-year-old students.”

  • PETA says that the teacher’s actions would “likely violate Texas cruelty-to-animals laws,” if the allegations are accurate. The complaint reportedly says a teacher brought four kittens from home into class and fed one to a snake.
  • The news release claims an upset student took the remaining three kittens home and unsuccessfully tried to nurse them back to health. Per PETA, the teacher allegedly “taunted the student,” saying, “You can’t save them all.”
  • PETA Vice President Rachelle Owen said, “If reports are true, an educator who should be teaching her students empathy and respect for others is instead tearing newborn kittens from their mother and subjecting them to a painful, terrifying death in front of shocked and traumatized teenagers.” They added, “Anyone who would demonstrate such cruel and disturbing behavior shouldn’t be around children or animals.”

The School Superintendent Insists The Allegations Are Not Accurate

Per CBS News, Alvord ISD Superintendent Randy Brown released a statement to “correct the record.” It reportedly details a different order of events.

  • Brown called the teacher an ” experienced educator and animal lover.” They reportedly teach advanced animal science and fed the “ailing” kitten to a snake before school. They then allegedly told the students about it.
  • Per NBC DFW, Brown said, “She later acknowledged this decision to her class and permitted a student, with parental consent, to take the remaining ailing kittens home.” The teacher has since apologized to the students and removed the snakes from the classroom.
  • According to CBS, local authorities reviewed the case but ultimately let the school district handle the incident. Brown reportedly said, “While we cannot provide additional details, we can confirm this was a one-time, isolated incident that has been addressed and fully remediated.”
